Absolutely mental illness can serve as a basis for a social security disability claim. It can serve as a basis in combination with a physical disability or impairment or they can be disabling on their own. Many of our clients do suffer from mental illnesses and there is actually specific sections set up in the federal regulations that deal just with mental illness. So if you do feel that you cannot work due to a mental illness, I would highly recommend that you apply for disability and seek counsel.
