What if I believe I was the victim of a hit-and-run in Florida?
If you’re the victim of a hit and run accident in Florida and you have sustained injuries, the first thing you want to do is try to get as much information from that vehicle or the person driving that vehicle before they’ve left the scene. If you can snap a quick picture with your cellphone of the back of the vehicle showing the license plate and do it safely, do that. If you can snap a picture of the driver before they’ve left, do that. If there are any witnesses to the hit-and-run, it is important for you to get that witness information and ask them to please stay there with you while you call the police.
Call the police. Have them come out and have a report done so that you have some documentation for your insurance company of what happened and that there was a hit-and-run driver. After that, if you are injured, then you should seek medical treatment immediately. If your injuries are severe enough, be seen at the hospital. If they’re not that severe, but you do require medical attention, you can go to your own PCP or you can go to a walk-in clinic or any other type of clinic so that you can be evaluated and treated. That needs to be done within 14 days of the accident or you could lose potential rights to your PTI benefits which would pay for your medical care.
