What is Social Security disability?

Video Transcription

Social security disability is a system that was set up by the federal government and also has a state component. It is set up to assist individuals who are disabled and unable to work. The general rule is that you are disabled and unable to work for a period of 12 months or will be expected to be disabled and unable to work for a period of 12 months based on a medical or psychological condition. Those conditions are proven through your medical records but the ultimate determination of whether you’re disabled or not is not made by your doctor but is made by the Social Security Administration. If you’re found to be disabled, you could qualify for monthly cash benefits to help you live on as well as medicare and or medicaid in order to assist you with paying medical bills.
